If you’ve been avoiding the dentist because of anxiety or uncertainty, you’re not alone. Dental cleanings are one of the most common reasons people put off appointments, especially if they haven’t had one in a while and aren’t sure what to expect.

But at Sunshine City Dentistry in St. Petersburg, Florida, we get it. And we’re here to walk you through it step by step!

In this guide, we’ll explain exactly what happens during a dental cleaning, offer tips for nervous patients, and show you why these appointments are so important for long-term oral health.

Step-by-Step: What Happens During a Dental Cleaning

1. Warm Welcome + Health Review

Before we get started, you’ll be greeted by our friendly front desk staff and fill out any necessary paperwork. If it’s your first visit, we’ll review your medical history, ask about any medications, and talk about any concerns you might have. If you’re nervous, this is a great time to let us know—we’re here to help.

2. X-Rays

If this is your first appointment, we will take an X-Ray. X-rays at a first dental visit help the dentist see problems not visible during an exam, like cavities between teeth, bone loss, or infections. They also give a baseline to track changes over time and help plan treatments.

For current patients, we take a full-mouth x-ray every 3 years and bite-wings once per year.

X-rays are quick, painless, and gives us a full picture of your oral health.

3. The Cleaning

Your hygienist will begin by removing plaque and tartar from around your teeth and gumline using special tools. You may hear a gentle scraping sound or feel light vibrations from an ultrasonic scaler. Both are totally normal and safe. This step is crucial to prevent gum disease.

4. Polishing

Next, we use a gritty toothpaste and a high-powered electric toothbrush to polish your teeth. This removes surface stains and makes your smile feel fresh and smooth.

5. Professional Flossing

Your hygienist will floss between each tooth to catch any leftover debris. This step also helps us identify if there are any spots that bleed easily, which could be a sign of inflammation or gingivitis.

6. Dental Exam with the Dentist

Your dentist will then perform a thorough exam, checking for signs of decay, gum disease, bite issues, or oral cancer. If anything is spotted, we’ll discuss next steps with you right away.

7. Fluoride Treatment (Optional)

Especially for patients prone to cavities, we may recommend a fluoride varnish to help strengthen tooth enamel and protect your teeth between visits.

Tips for Patients with Dental Anxiety

  • Eat before your visit: Eating a light meal beforehand can help you feel grounded and avoid lightheadedness.

  • Bring headphones: Listen to your favorite music or podcast to help distract you and create a calming environment.

  • Use hand signals: Let us know if you want to pause at any time, we’re happy to take breaks.

  • Ask about nitrous oxide: Also known as laughing gas, this mild sedative helps patients feel relaxed during treatment.

Why Regular Cleanings Matter

Skipping cleanings allows plaque and tartar to build up, which can lead to gum inflammation, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss—but it’s preventable. Cleanings also allow us to spot small issues before they become big (and expensive) problems.

Even if your teeth feel fine, routine cleanings help:

  • Prevent gum disease

  • Catch early signs of decay

  • Brighten your smile

  • Freshen your breath

  • Boost your confidence
