The holidays are full of cozy traditions, seasonal drinks, and of course, plenty of sweets. Cookie exchanges, peppermint mochas, cheese boards, gingerbread houses, champagne toasts—it’s all part of the fun. But this is also the time of year when many people notice more tooth sensitivity, plaque buildup, or even the start of cavities.

The good news? You don’t have to skip the snacks to protect your smile. A few simple habits can keep your teeth healthy without giving up the festive treats you love.

At Sunshine City Dentistry, we believe in balance. Enjoy the holidays, just keep your smile in mind along the way.

Why Holiday Sweets Put Extra Stress on Teeth

Most holiday treats fall into one of three categories: sticky, sugary, or acidic. When these foods linger on teeth, bacteria use them as fuel to create acids that wear down enamel. Over time, this can lead to cavities, sensitivity, and discoloration.

Here are a few holiday favorites that can be especially tough on teeth:

  • Candy canes and peppermints These dissolve slowly in your mouth, coating teeth in sugar the entire time.

  • Caramels, fudge, and sticky toffees These get stuck in tiny grooves and between teeth, where brushing doesn’t always reach.

  • Sugary seasonal drinks (cider, hot cocoa, peppermint lattes) Sipping slowly = prolonged sugar exposure.

  • Bubbly cocktails and champagne The bubbles and alcohol are acidic, which can weaken enamel.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy them, just that how you enjoy them matters.

Simple Ways to Protect Your Smile (While Still Enjoying the Holidays)

These are realistic, totally doable habits that make a big impact.

1. Enjoy Sweets With Meals

Instead of snacking throughout the day, eat holiday treats alongside a meal. Saliva production is already higher during a meal, which helps wash away sugars more effectively.

2. Drink More Water (Especially Between Treats)

Water helps rinse the mouth and neutralize acidity. Tap water in St. Pete also naturally contains fluoride—bonus protection for enamel.

Enjoy the treat → Sip water → Go on with your day

3. Switch to Chocolate Over Sticky Candy

Chocolate—especially dark chocolate—melts easily and rinses clean. It doesn’t stick to teeth the way caramels and gummies do. So yes, chocolate is the dentist-approved choice.

4. Don’t Brush Right After Wine or Citrus

This one surprises many people. When enamel is exposed to acid, brushing too soon can actually wear it down further.

Wait 30 minutes before brushing. If you can, rinse with water in the meantime.

5. Chew Sugar-Free Gum After Snacks

Look for gum that contains xylitol, a plant-based sweetener that helps reduce cavity-causing bacteria.

Chew for 10–15 minutes after enjoying something sweet.

Holiday Drinks and Tooth Staining

Red wine, espresso martinis, and hot cocoa are delicious, but they can stain enamel over time.

To reduce staining:

  • Drink through a straw when you can (especially iced drinks)

  • Alternate sips with water

  • Maintain regular cleanings to polish away surface stains

A professional whitening treatment in January can give your smile a fresh, bright reset after the season!

Schedule Your Post-Holiday Cleaning

The end of the year is a great time to reset your smile care habits. If it’s been more than six months since your last cleaning, schedule one once the holiday rush winds down.

A professional cleaning:

  • Removes plaque and tartar buildup

  • Helps prevent gum irritation and cavities

  • Polishes away surface stains

  • Leaves your smile fresh going into the New Year

Plus, January schedules tend to fill quickly—so booking early is always a good idea.

Keep Your Smile Merry, Bright, and Healthy This Season

You can absolutely enjoy the festive foods, the holiday drinks, and the sweet traditions you love. Just a few small habits can go a long way toward protecting your teeth.

If you’re due for a cleaning, whitening refresh, or want to start the New Year with your healthiest smile yet, we’d love to see you!
